🌿 Tulsi (Holy Basil) 🪴
Tulsi — virtuous, useful, full of qualities. It gives oxygen to others, standing at the threshold of the home, offering life-giving air to everyone who passes by. It is a medicinal plant—especially valued in Ayurveda—for calming acidity, aiding digestion, and improving blood health.
Who is it?
Despite having so many qualities, it is often not given a place inside the house but kept outside (we often fail to value what is close to us). It is beloved of Lord Vishnu, the sustainer of the universe.
What is special about it?
Even with so many benefits, it does not bear showy flowers or fruits and is often treated like a wild plant. (Humans tend to desire beauty and visible rewards from God.)
Tulsi, dear to Vishnu, lives simply, yet serves the world by giving life through oxygen.
Reward?
Yes—when Lord Vishnu goes to meet Lord Shiva, Tulsi is granted the honor of being recognized as a wife.
When?
From Devuthani Ekadashi to Vaikunth Chaturdashi, the ritual of Tulsi Vivah is performed. After this, auspicious ceremonies like marriages and housewarmings are considered appropriate.
What should we learn?
To dedicate ourselves for others—help never goes to waste. Even a wild plant without flowers or fruits can be beloved to Vishnu, dearer than flowers. Just as Lakshmi resides in the lotus that grows in mud 🪷, it shows that more than appearance or fragrance, what truly matters is action, love, faith, and generosity of heart.
